Our Story
I purchased my home in Washington Park in 2017. At a time when many buyers were scraping and rebuilding I promised the previous owners that I would keep their house, the hardscape and beautiful gardens intact. From their homesteading efforts, I inherited perennial flowers and herbs, raspberries, blackberries, organically amended soil AND a cute little blue shed.
After hours of education and volunteering as a CSU Master Gardener and working with Grow Local CO, I grew increasingly concerned about the lack of access many people in the metro area have to fresh and healthy food.
In 2020, I hired Earth Love Gardens, LLC to install 6 raised beds for food production. With that effort, Blue Shed Urban Gardens was born.
Since 2020, the Blue Shed Community Members have...
Produced/collected over 3,000 lbs. of fruits, herbs and vegetables (grown &/or dropped on my porch), and donated to local hunger relief organizations including SAME Café, Denver Food Rescue, Andrea’s & Huerta Urbana’s No-Cost Markets, South HS’s Giving Grocery, Kaizen Food Rescue, The Rocky Mountain Islamic Center, the Birdseed Collective and the Gathering Place.
Collaborated with Grow Local CO, DPS’s Garden of Youth, and Craig Hospital to grow over 1,300 lbs of food for the South High School Giving Grocery, serving students and their families.
Started/donated seedlings for Metro Caring, Huerta Urbana, Kaizen Food Rescue, MASA Seed Foundation, Re:Vision, The Potted Peace Project, The Preservery/Garden Place Academy, Andrea’s No-Cost Market, Grow Local CO and Spirit of the Sun .
In partnership with Grow Local Colorado, gleaned over 24,000 lbs of fruit from area homeowners, and distributed to 31 area schools and community organizations.
Spearheaded the Applesauce Project, using apples gleaned from the community, to produce over 300 jars of applesauce and 42 jars of concord grape for Metro Caring, Clayton Cares Market and South High School’s Giving Grocery.
Provided weekly garden time in the spring and fall for South High School students in the SPED classroom. Thanks to FROG for awarding a grant for this work.
Recognized, along with Grow Local Colorado, as DPS's ACE Connect Transition Team's '21-'22 Community Partners of the Year and Channel 7's Everyday Hero.
Sponsored a free Seed Giveaway at Convivio Cafe and film night “To Which We Belong” at The Table, along with GLC, Slow Food Denver, DUG and Ekar farm.
